Ponyo (2008)
Directed by Hayao Miyazaki
As a follower of Studio Ghibli films, I was just as eager to
watch Ponyo as any other Ghibli film. Though I was concerned with the
diminishing quality of Ghibli films recently, nevertheless, I got hold
of a copy of Ponyo anxiously.
Watching Ponyo, I was struck by the effort put into this work of art, but do all good things last?

Similar to the scenario of Disneyʼs The Little Mermaid, Ponyo is
a story of a goldfish named Ponyo, who desperately wants to be human.
Throw in a David Bowie look-a-like Magician, a boy that knows true love
at the age of five (not to mention morse code and the scientific names
of ancient fish species from the age of dinosaurs), an “epic” journey
to stop a cataclysmic disaster involving the moon colliding into the
earth; yes, the story is pretty crazy, even for a “Ghibli” film.

As much as I
would like it to be, this is not your “average” Mayazaki film. Hayao
Mayazaki, one of the prominent film makers in Japanese cinema, is
famous for his use of traditional art techniques, themes of
environmentalism, and pacifism, as well as a rich soundscape that takes
the audience to another universe filled with imagination. This film
certainly sticks to the Mayazaki name by having a glamourous
water-paint art style that takes us back to Mayazakiʼs roots, as well
as an grand and charming soundtrack written by veteran Joe Hasaishi.
However, gone are the tales of consequence from pollution and war,
replaced by an americanized story of love, that resembles something
from a typical Disney story.
The English dub, on the other hand is quite well done, featuring
a cast of A-list actors, including Liam Nelson and Cate Blanchett. For
an English dub, this cast has managed to accomplished the task of
creating a believable and appealing performance, although the Japanese
dub brings more emotion and energy onto the table compared to their
english counterparts.
I really wanted to believe that Ponyo would be perfect, however,
writing this review, I found that there were many things that made this
film rather ordinary compared to his other works. Ponyo is a childrenʼs
film, and it doesnʼt try to be anything else. Children will adore this
tale, and adults will be amazed by the level of detail in the art style.
This isnʼt his tour de force, but issues aside, this film will treat you to a visual and theatrical experience.

“Although not your typical Mayazaki film, Ponyo shines as a childrenʼs film, one that will keep you
immersed in by the visual style and soundtrack.” - Ernest Su (8 out of 10)
Ponyo movie review

"hi Ernest, congratulations,
you have been selected to be a film critic for the Brisbane film festival!!! I will send you information as it arrives. You will be working with a select group and critiquing films as well as going to movie world and cutting edge design...
well done! "
